“We reclaim our spaces in popular music. ”
Empowering music sessions with BIPoC womxn musicians
A space to deconstruct and transform shared experiences of discrimination.
A reclamation. A response to the systemic exclusion of BIPoC womxn from pop music culture - pushing back against the structures that have long silenced marginalized voices.
The project is rooted in RUSNAM's personal history with music. Drawing from the pop songs of female artists from the 90s and 2000s that shaped her adolescence, she confronts a painful contradiction: these were the songs that formed her - and yet, as a queer musician with Turkish and Arab roots, she was never truly reflected in them.
Through deconstruction and reimagination, RUSNAM strips these songs of their embedded stereotypes and rebuilds them as something liberated: music that exists beyond the narrow confines of origin, identity, and the pop icon myth.
